Commemoration ceremony for Khajeh Nasireddin Tousi

Tehran, Feb 21, IRNA – Iran’s Academy of Sciences will honor three top Iranian engineers on February 24 as part of the programs to commemorate noted Iranian scientist, Khajeh Nasireddin Tousi, who is considered the first Iranian engineer.
Announcing this, director of the academy Seyyed Ali Pezeshki told IRNA Sunday that Mohammad Reza Ansari, Reza Kheirandish and Jahan Foulad Firouzi-Fouladi, who specialize in civil, environment and mechanical engineering respectively, will be honored during the ceremony.
Tousi was born in Tous, Khorasan province, in 1201 AD and died in 1274 AD in Kazemain (in today’s Iraq).
He was one of the greatest scientists, philosophers, mathematicians, astronomers, theologians and physicians of the time and was a prolific writer. He made significant contributions to a large number of subjects.
He wrote one or several treatises on different sciences and subjects including those on geometry, algebra, arithmetic, trigonometry, medicine, metaphysics, logic, ethics and theology. In addition he wrote poetry in Persian.
As the chief scientist at the observatory established under his supervision at Maragha, West Azarbaijan province, he made significant contributions to astronomy.
Tousi's role has been significant in the development of science, notably in mathematics and astronomy. His books were widely consulted for centuries and he has been held in high repute for his rich contributions.
