PM: Science ministry officials will brief military on GT200 bomb detector tests

BANGKOK, Feb 21 (TNA) – Thailand’s Science and Technology Ministry will propose to Cabinet Tuesday sending its technical experts to brief the military and the Defence Ministry on how inefficient the British-made GT200 bomb detector is, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday.

The briefing would lead them to stop using the machine eventually, said Mr Abhisit.

His remarks were made after Army chief Gen Anupong Paochinda last week met told a press conference that the device had proved sucessful in detecting explosives and saving lives on 300 occasions.

If the government disallows using the device immediately, it could negatively affect the morale of security officials and may create a conflict with the military, Mr Abhisit said, adding that the government must find a substitute for the device before it is eliminated.

Mr Abhisit announced on Tuesday scrapping GT200 orders, saying the device could not be considered effective since it failed crucial performance test. It found the explosives only four times out of 20. (TNA)
