Iran will produce nuclear fuel plates in four months

TEHRAN, Feb. 21 (MNA) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has announced that Iran will produce plate type nuclear fuel in four months.
“Those who claim that Iran is not capable of producing nuclear fuel plates should wait, because they will see the results of our work in four months,” he told the IRNA news agency on Saturday.
Ever since Iran began its nuclear program, some have asserted that Iran has not gained access to nuclear expertise and all its nuclear equipment has been imported and supposed that if sanctions were imposed on the importation of the required parts, Iran’s nuclear activities would come to a grinding halt, he said.
Then the world acknowledged that Iranian scientists could enrich uranium to 3.5 percent, they observed that Iranians had built new generations of centrifuges, and they could no longer deny Iran’s achievements, he added.
He went on to say that Iran has always conducted its nuclear activities under the supervision of International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, adding that “they themselves know that Iran has this capability (to produce nuclear fuel plates).”
When Iran announced that it had produced the first batch of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel, Western officials started expressing doubt about the reports, but when they saw that the IAEA confirmed this achievement, they began questioning Iran’s capability to produce nuclear fuel plates, he stated.
Mehmanparast also said that the nuclear plant for converting 20 percent enriched fuel into fuel rods was inaugurated in Isfahan in early spring 2009.
The technology for producing nuclear fuel plates does not differ greatly from the technology for producing nuclear fuel rods, he added.
