Victoria still facing bushfire threat

Authorities are warning the bushfire threat is not over, with high temperatures
expected to create severe conditions across Victoria this weekend.
Temperatures are forecast to reach the mid to high 30s across the state on Saturday
and Sunday.

State Control Centre spokesperson, Ross Sullivan said that although recent rain had
provided some welcome relief for firefighters, residents in bushfire prone areas
needed to remain vigilant.
"The fire season is far from over. In the first two weeks of February we still had
over 100 grass and scrub fires and as the weather heats up over the next few days,
we need everyone to remain on alert," he said.
Fire Danger Ratings are forecast to be severe in the Western and Wimmera districts
on Saturday.
"These are dangerous fire conditions and we are asking people in those areas to be
on high alert and prepare their bushfire survival plan," said Mr Sullivan.
"Keep an eye on conditions and be prepared ... this is not a time for complacency."
Mr Sullivan said while the rain was welcome, it also promoted growth, especially in
grasslands.
"These increased fuel loads can increase the speed and intensity of fires,
particularly with the warm and dry conditions that we're facing over the weekend,"
he said.
