FIVE FROM SUNKEN BOAT IN MALUKU STILL MISSING
Ambon, Maluku Province, June 24 (ANTARA) - At least five people who had been on a traditional motor boat which sank in waters in West Southeast Maluku district on Saturday (June 21) have until Tuesday (June 24) remained missing, local police said.
"We, with the cooperation of the local military, the West Southeast Maluku district administration and local residents living in areas surrounding the sea where the traditional boat sank, continue to look for the missing passengers intensively," West Southeast Maluku Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Tommy Napitupulu said here on Tuesday.
Of the 13 people who were on the boat when it sank, three people were killed, five survived and five others went missing.
The ill-fated boat sank after it developed engine trouble and was hit by huge waves, the local military commander, Col Inf. Yudi Zanibar said earlier.
The boat was sailing from Nobar to Esulit, West Southeast Maluku District when the accident happened.
Rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather and huge waves.
