Aussie awaits Bali extradition decision
An Australian man arrested in Bali will learn next week if he will be extradited to
face drugs charges in NSW.
Timothy Geoffrey Lee, 44, was arrested in Kuta at Australia's request last month.
Australian police want Lee, a dual Australian/British passport holder, to face trial
over cocaine seized in a Sydney self-storage facility and money seized from a
Melbourne safety deposit box in 2006.
The Denpasar District Court is considering Australia's extradition request.
Lee's lawyer, Erwin Siregar, has requested the Australian government abandon its
extradition request because his client is prepared to return and face trial
voluntarily.
"Extradition would take a long time, especially when it is not regulated how long
someone can be detained," Siregar told the court on Wednesday.
Extradition from Indonesia to Australia usually takes about one year, during which
time the accused must remain in custody.
One Australian man - Robert James McNeice - has been waiting more than 18 months for
extradition to face fraud charges in NSW.
Judge Daniel Palittin said the case was "a priority" and the court would deliver its
verdict on Monday, February 22.
