China-Russia distrustful of West sanctions on Iran : UK analyst

London, Feb 17, IRNA - China and Russia do not trust the West for “valid reasons” and this might prevent them from allying with the EU3 and the United States in imposing further sanctions on Iran, a British analyst says.
Peter Eyre, the director of Eyre International consultation group, said it would be “most unwise” for China and Russia to become too involved in the US drive to impose fresh Iran sanctions as “both have much to lose”.
“China desperately needs Iran for its own economic growth and consumption of oil and gas. They may well take part but if so will only do what they have to do...otherwise it would commercial suicide,” he told IRNA.
Referring to the deterioration of relations between China and the US, Eyre said controversies such as the Google issue and the upcoming Dalai Lama visit to the US will stop Beijing from allying with the West on Iran.
“...The other issue here is what is agreed upon face to face with other leader does not apply to either Russia or China when they go back home....Deep down they do not trust the West and they have many valid reasons to think this way.”
Eyre said further sanctions will not weaken but strengthen Iran’s “determination not to succumb to the West's demands”.
“I personally feel now that the US-UK-EU and Israel are scared of Iran and this is just a cat and mouse game. If I were Iran, I would not accept or trust anything from the West until such time as they changed their attitude towards Iran and modified their deeply flawed foreign policy,” he said.
“I think Iran is playing the game extremely well and should keep up the good work and not be bullied,” he added.
Referring to the recent technological breakthroughs in Iran, the British analyst said the country is “much more advanced than what we know and may already have the technology [of producing highly-enriched uranium] this year”.
“The US, Britain, EU and Israel want conflict and now they are looking for the justification to carry out such conflict. This plan was in place in 2007...and would be a catastrophic disaster for everyone and must never be allowed to happen.”/end
