Veteran Iranian sorna player dies
TEHRAN, Feb. 17 (MNA) -- Veteran musician Ali-Akbar Mehdipur Dehkordi, known for his haunting melody played at the turn of the Iranian year, died of heart failure in his hometown on Monday. He was 75.
He was most famous for the sorna, a wind instrument resembling bugle, which he played and recorded about 24 years ago. For the past three decades, the melody has been broadcast on Iran’s national TV and radio channels at the time of the New Year.
Besides playing the sorna, Mehdipur was also famous for playing the karna, a wind instrument with no holes in it that produces a powerful bass sound by means of the player’s breath, and the kamancheh (spike fiddle).
The musician was born in 1935 in a region in Chahar-Mahal Bakhtiari Province. He began to play sorna at the age of 17.
He later found interest in karna and kamancheh and became a professional musician specializing in traditional instruments and performing in many festivals and events overseas.
Canada, Germany, France, Kyrgyzstan, Dubai, Japan, Turkey and Kuwait are among the countries where he performed his music.
Performing at Fajr Music Festival, Iran’s Regional Music Festival in Kerman and playing the sorna in the theme music of Amrollah Ahmadju’s TV series “Once Upon A Time” are also among his credits.
He was also well acquainted with dastgahs of Iranian music. In Iranian music, a dastgah is a scale of notes, their features, and an associated group of traditional melodies that constitute a basis for an improvisational performance.
Mehdipur was buried in the main cemetery at Shahr-e Kord on Tuesday.
