Iranian MPs in favor of reducing ties with UK

TEHRAN, Feb. 17 (MNA) – In a letter to the British ambassador on Tuesday, Majlis Foreign Policy and National Security Committee Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi called on the London government to correct its past errors with regard to Iran.
The letter by Boroujerdi came in response to an earlier letter by the British Ambassador to Tehran, Simon Gass, in which he had called for maintaining ties with Iran.
Boroujerdi wrote the majority of Iranian MPs will stand by their decision to reduce ties with Britain. He said MPs may even consider a freeze in relations.
It is regrettable that after the victory of the Islamic Revolution the British government has missed many opportunities to establish good relationship with Iran based on mutual respect, the top lawmaker noted.
He pointed out that the conduct of the British embassy in Tehran represents a significant departure from the established international conventions, particularly the Vienna Convention on diplomatic behavior.
The lawmaker went on to say that the toppled Saddam Hussein’s regime enjoyed an “extensive and illogical support” from the British government during its eight-year war against Iran in the 1980s.
In the letter Boroujerdi stated, “The history of our country over the past 100 years is riddled with your country’s many interferences in Iran’s internal affairs.”
Boroujerdi condemned efforts by Britain to deprive Iran of its right to peaceful nuclear technology and approving new resolutions against Iran at the UN Security Council.
He also denounced countless remarks by various British officials to undermine Iran’s territorial integrity especially in the months before and after the June presidential elections.
The chairman of the parliamentary security committee said that the British government needs to revise its policies towards Iran, adding Iran’s policy is to have and maintain relations with countries which respect international conventions based on mutual interests and trust.
