Russia to deliver S300 air defense systems to Iran
Moscow, Deb 16, IRNA – The first deputy director of Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation said here Monday that Russia is resolving all technical difficulties for delivering S300 air defense systems to Iran.
Alexander Fomin added in an interview with his country’s RIA Novosty news agency, “The technical difficulties had occurred in the radio wave system of the S300 sets, which are being solved by technicians.”
The Russian officials have on numerous occasions announced that the S300 systems are among the defense military equipments and their delivery to Iran would be no means disturb the region’s military balance.
Deputy Secretary of Russia’s National Security Council Vladimir Nazarov, too, focusing on delivery of S300 air defense system missile systems to Iran, said on Monday, “The related contract has been signed between the two countries and we need to implement it, but the delivery of the missiles to Iran has not begun yet.”
He emphasized, “The matter is unrelated with the international sanctions and restrictions against Iran and Russia act in the framework of its own sets of rules and regulations regardless of some parties’ calls for refraining from the missiles’ delivery to Iran.”
The S300 dir defense missile system is capable of destroying various types of aircrafts, winged, ballistic and tactical missiles.
Iran had last week and during the ten day celebrations marking the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution announced it will soon unveil a domestically-made air defense system with at least the same capability as Russia's S-300 anti-aircraft hardware; an Iranian air force commander was quoted as saying on Monday, February 8th.
Last month, Russia's state arms trader had declined to say whether it would go ahead with the sale of S-300 to Iran.
'In the near future, a new locally-made air defense system will be unveiled by the country's experts and scientists which is as powerful as the S-300 missile defense system, or even stronger,' Heshmatollah Kassiri told IRNA news agency.
The possible sale of the S-300, which could protect Iran's nuclear facilities against air strikes, is a sensitive issue in Russia's relations with the United States and Israel, which have pressed
Moscow not to proceed with the deal.
Earlier, the semi-official Fars News Agency, citing senior air force official Aziz Nasirzadeh, had said that Iran has successfully tested a radar-evading aircraft.
The prototype of a radar-evading aircraft named Swordfish had been test-flown, he said. 'The prototype of this aircraft ... completed all radar evading characteristics considered by us,' he said.
