Government spends Bt512 million to improve livelihood

NARATHIWAT, Feb 14 (TNA) -- More violence occurred in the restive South early Sunday where many people are celebrating both Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, even as the government will spend nearly Bt513 million this year to improve livelihoods in five provinces, officials said.

About 100 combined government forces early Sunday exchanged gunfire for half an hour with suspected insurgents sheltering in a one-storey wooden house in Bacho district of Narathiwat province.

One insurgent was shot dead and an 11mm pistol was found near the body, police said. Two insurgents with rewards on their heads were apprehended along with the house owner and one escaped.

In nearby Pattani province, a mother and her daughter were shot dead by two gunmen while they rode a motorcycle home from market. Following the victims by motorcycle, the assailants fired three times from a shotgun and fled the scene.

More than 4,000 people have been killed since renewed insurgency erupted in the deep South in January 2004.

In another development, Panu Uthairat, director of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC), said assistance provided by the agency since 2007 to five southern provinces -- Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun and Songkhla -- have proved successful as people have cooperated more with state officials while their livelihood also improved.

SBPAC will award money totaling Bt512.8 million for deposit in banks in the five provinces so that funds can be withdrawn later for development projects, said Mr. Panu.

The budget presentation ceremony will be presided over by Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam on February 19. (TNA)
