Security for government offices tightened as protesters plan to rally
BANGKOK, Feb 13 (TNA) -- Security for government offices at the new government complex near Chaeng Wattana Road has been tightened as anti-government protesters plan to stage a demonstration there next Monday, less than two weeks before a court is due to hand down a verdict on frozen assets worth Bt76.6 billion of fugitive, ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Members of United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plan to hold the rally at the Election Commission (EC) on Monday.
Senior military officers and officials of government offices located within the government complex earlier this week discussed their responses to the protesters who will march to government offices, especially the election agency and the Constitution Court, which deal directly with political affairs.
The EC now allows only its staff to enter its offices and police special forces are providing protection to ranking officers.
Three commando officers are now protecting Chat Chonlaworn, president of the Constitution Court, together with a dozen military officers.
Tightening security comes as judges of the Supreme Court Criminal Division for Holders of Political Position will hand down their verdict on February 26 regarding whether Mr Thaksin's Bt76.6 billion in frozen assets were accumulated illegally while Mr Thaksin was prime minister.
Mr Thaksin was ousted in a bloodless coup in September 2006.
The UDD on Friday rallied at the office of National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) seeking progress reports on corruption cases involving with the ruling Democrat Party.
The Red Shirts on Wednesday rallied at police headquarters demanding progress on cases involving the anti-Thaksin Yellow Shirt People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) activists. They also plan to protest at the Election Commission on Monday to pressure for action on investigating key cases including what they term as the Democrat Party's alleged unlawful Bt258 million donation.
