Thai authorities tighten security for prime minister
BANGKOK, Feb 13 (TNA) -- Security for Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, both for himself personally and at his residence in Bangkok, remain tightened, even after the arrest of a man who admitted to throwing human waste at his home earlier this month was arrested and sentenced to five days jail time, according to the authorities.
Police said security for Mr Abhisit and at his residence have been tightened with 26 anti-riot police and military police manning the residence during each shift from early Saturday.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has been ordered to cut some tree branches inside the residence in order to facilitate security access, police said.
Police said the security plan has been in place and Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Pol Lt-Gen Santan Chayanont had instructed the measures should be observed strictly.
Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, an army specialist known as 'Seh Deang' who supports fugitive ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra warned earlier that a member of the anti-government protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), the Red Shirts, would visit premier at his residence.
More barricades and mesh netting have been installed around the prime minister's home. Ten more closed-circuit television monitors have been erected and the pictures recorded can be transmitted directly to a police station, they said.
Security for the prime minister in all locations has tightened after Wiwitwin Teosawat carried out his aerial excrement bombardment at Mr Abhisit’s home. He was arrested Friday and a court found him guilty of disturbing and dishonouring other people and tainting private property with dirty objects and sentenced him to 10 days imprisonment. The court later reduced his jail sentence by half to five days because he confessed to the offence.
Mr Wiwitwin told the court that he was frustrated with the police and city government officials who ignored his complaints about neighbours who always smoked cigarettes near his house. He said the smoke affected his daughter's health.
The assailant said that he did it alone and that it had nothing to do with politics. (TNA)
