BIN CHIEF ASKS POLICE TO PROVE EXISTENCE OF INCRIMINATING ASSIGNMENT LETTER
Jakarta, June 23 (ANTARA) - State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Syamsir Siregar said he had asked the police to prove the existence of a letter allegedly signed by former BIN deputy chief As'ad assigning former Garuda pilot Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto to airline company Garuda's flight safety department.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the State Palace here on Monday, Siregar said he had never seen the letter (which appears to be one of the pieces of evidence the police are using in their investigations into the possibility of the involvement of former BIN officials in the case).
Police have already arrested former BIN deputy chief Muchdi PR as a suspect in the case. Priyanto is currently serving a 20-year jail sentence for his role in Munir's murder but a non-governmental team that had collected data on the case some time ago believed Priyanto was merely the executor of a plan hatched by others.
Siregar even denied the existence of the letter. "The existence of the letter must first be proven. I have never seen such a letter," he said.
But Siregar also said BIN was fully leaving the arrest of former BIN deputy chief Maj Gen (ret) Muchdi PR to the police. "The problem is being handled by the police. So, let them investigate him," he added.
The Indonesian National Police Headquarters arrested Muchdi last week for alleged involvement in the murder of human rights activist Munir Said Thalib.
Munir died after being poisoned during a Garuda flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam on September 7, 2004.
Before holding a limited meeting on a state administration bill at the presidential office, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono held a separate meeting in his working room at the State Palace.
The meeting was attended by Syamsir Siregar, Police Chief Gen Sutanto, Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Gen Djoko Santoso, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Coordinating Minister for the People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie and Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi.
Minister Hatta Radjasa denied that the meeting specifically discussed matters related to the Munir murder case.
He said the separate meeting discussed the state administration bill. But when the meeting to discuss the bill was begun, Siregar and the TNI commander had already left the State Palace complex.
