ARMY CHIEF REMINDS MILY POLICE ALWAYS TO RESPECT HUMAN RIGHTS
Bogor, June 23 (ANTARA) - Army Chief of Staff General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo said the Army's Military Police (Pomad) corps must carry out their law-enforcing tasks in accordance with human right values.
"I hope the Army's Military Police wILL carry out their law- enforcement functions based on human right values," the Army chief said at the 62nd anniversary celebration of Pomad in Jonggol, Bogor district, West Java, on Monday.
He also said Pomad officers should increase their knowledge about the laws existing locally, nationally or internationally so that they would not be trapped in legal problems only because of their ignorance.
Purnomo also said in the current era of reform and democratization , law enforcement was the main instrument in realizing openness and exercising responsible freedom.
"Therefore, Pomad officers must improve their performance by widening their horizons on legal affairs," the Army chief said.
On the occasion, Purnomo also reminded the Pomad rank and file to prepare themselves in the face of the implementation of the Law on Public Courts under which active servicemen involved in general criminal offenses would be tried in public courts.
"This is one of the demands of reform in the military as stipulated in Law No.34 / 2004 on the Military which stipulates that any military man who is involved in a general crime will be prosecuted in a public court," he said.
