Red Shirts rally at anti-graft office seeking action on corruption cases
BANGKOK, Feb 12 (TNA) - Anti-government protesters of Thailand’s United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Friday rallied at the office of National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) seeking progress reports on corruption cases involving with the ruling Democrat Party after the opposition Puea Thai Party had earlier pressed for the latest developments.
The so-called Red Shirts gathered at Gate 4 of Government House, opposite the anti-graft office building, at 10am, paralysing traffic on Phitsanulok Road and the surrounding area of Government House. The rally is scheduled to end at 6pm.
The protesters voiced complaints that several cases in process at the NACC are taking too long to resolve.
The cases include alleged irregularities involving the Financial Sector Restructuring Authority (FRA) and procurement of fire engines by the Bangkok Metropolitan Adminstration in which Democrat party politicians were involved.
Security has been tightened to prevent any untoward incident, with one company each of metropolitan and riot police deployed. The entrance gates of Government House, the NACC and the Office of the Civil Service Commission, all located in the same area, were closed for safety.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is reportedly working at Government House office despite the Red Shirt rally outside, while the NACC commissioners are also reported to be working as usual at the NACC offices.
The Red Shirts on Wednesday rallied at police headquarters demanding progress on cases involving the anti-Thaksin Yellow Shirt Peoples Alliance for Democracy (PAD) activists. They also planned to protest at the Election Commission on Monday to pressure for action on investigating key cases including the Democrat Party's alleged unlawful Bt258 million donation.
The UDD continuing campaign against government and state agencies has been launched ahead of the February court verdict on the Bt76.6 billion (US$2.3 billion) frozen assets of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra. With frequent movements by protesters likely to be intensified this month, the government has instructed the setup of checkpoints and centres in the capital and risk-prone provinces to monitor the situation and maintain order.
