Thailand’s Consumer Confidence Index highest in 21 months

BANGKOK, Feb 11 (TNA) – Thailand’s Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) in January rose to 79.3, its highest in 21 months, according to a survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

The Consumer Confidence Index in January stayed high for the third consecutive month due to several positive factors, particularly expectation of the government’s economic stimulus measures, an increased minimum wage, extended measures to help low income earners, land ow diesel oil prices, according to Thanawat Polvichai, director of the UTCC Center for Economic and Business Forecasting.

However, consumers are still concerned about the economy which may become worse owing to political problems, high cost of living, and court suspension of the Map Ta Phut industrial projects, he said.

The current CCI stayed at 65.8, the highest in 13 months.

Dr Thanawat said that Thai consumption will improve from the second quarter owing to expected economic recovery and employment, unless negative factors such as political turmoil occur in the future.

He advised the government to speedily push for tangible results from its second round of economic stimulus measures to create jobs and to stabilise politics to revive economic confidence.

The UTTC projects the economy in 2010 would grow 3.5-4 per cent based on the assumption that there is no violence in the political turmoil and the price of diesel stays around 30 baht per litre. (TNA)
