International Public Service Day tomorrow
DHAKA, Bangladesh, June 23 (BSS) - International Public Service Day will be observed tomorrow across the country as elsewhere in the world with an objective to commend and encourage exemplary public
service.
Elaborate programmes have been chalked to observe the day at
the United Nations headquarter in New York as well as other
capitals of the member countries of this world body.
"The day recognizes that democracy and successful governance
are built on the foundation of a competent civil service," said
Guido Bertucci, Director of the United Nations Division for
Public Administration and Development Management of the
Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
"The ability of a society to maintain safety and essential
public services, protect human rights, maintain an efficient
framework for market activities and to hold free and fair
elections draws on the skills and sense of purpose of public
servants working as a team. Without an effective civil
administration, democracy and prosperity are virtually
unattainable," he observed.
In a message on the eve of the day, Chief Adviser of the
Caretaker Government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said that he was
confident that the public services in the country would reach
greater heights implementing policies and programmes of the
government in the coming days and attain the capability to
effectively respond to the needs of a changing world.
Expressing his pleasure at the decision of the ministry of
establishment to observe the occasion, the chief adviser noted
that the day celebrates the virtues of public service at local,
national and global levels. "Its essence is to motivate public
officials to become more committed to serving their respective
communities," he added.
In a resale at the UN headquarters on the eve of the day it
was announced that the values of teamwork, innovation and
responsiveness to the public are reflected in the United Nations
Public Service Awards, which will be presented on June 23 to the
government departments of 14 countries from all regions of the
world.
The idea of an international day to commend public service
was first proposed by the Committee of Experts on Public
Administration, an independent panel of experts from both
government and academic institutions. The General Assembly
established the Day in 2002, by means of resolution A/RES/57/227.
