US company offers launching IT and broadcasting satellite for Bangladesh
DHAKA, Bangladesh, June 23 (BSS) - A US company, 'New Skies' has offered Bangladesh to carry out all of its work to launch its own IT and broadcasting satellite at a cost of 100 million dollars, highly
placed sources said.
A senior consultant of the National Aeronautical and Space
Administration (NASA) of USA, Harun Rashid Khan is coming to
Dhaka early next month. He will place a paper on the technical
aspect and facilities on usage of a satellite, the sources said.
Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory
Commission (BTRC) Major General (retd) Manjurul Alam, is going to
visit Vietnam to gather experience on launching of satellites on
July 2-4. He will also visit the headquarters of the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at Geneva to settle
problems on frequency.
Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on post and
telecommunications ministry Brigadier General (retd) MA Malek
told BSS that initiative on launching a satellite should have
been taken much earlier. The American company, New Skies
has already offered launching a Satellite at a cost of 100 million
dollar.
He said a representative of the company met him today at the
Secretariat and placed the offer. Malek advised him to meet the
chairman of the BTRC.
A senior expert from NASA is coming to Bangladesh next month
who will advice Bangladesh on the Satellites, he added.
Malek said small countries like Singapore, Cambodia and
Vietnam have also launched satellites at their own initiatives.
Bangladesh have taken no initiatives in this regard. But ITU have
already provided 'orbital allocation.'
The chairman of BTRC is going to Geneva to resolve problems
on frequency, he added.
The special adviser said since Bangladesh have no satellite
of its own it has been forced to spent its hard earned foreign
exchange on satellite rentals to maintain internal and
international communications and broadcasting services.
Bangladesh would not only save foreign currencies but also
get high quality services on technical side.
