Bt38 billion to circulate during Chinese New Year: Survey

BANGKOK, Feb 10 (TNA) – A survey on Thais’ expected spending during the upcoming Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day celebrations found money in circulation for the dual occasion is estimated to be over Bt38 billion.

University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) vice president for research, Dr Sauwanee Thairungroj, said that according to the survey, money in circulation for Chinese New Year alone was estimated at around Bt36 billion, a 4-per-cent increase from the past year.

People in Bangkok and its vicinity tend to spend the most for this occasion at about Bt13 billion, followed by those in the South who will spend around almost Bt5 billion, which is the increasing the spending ratio of 6 per cent, thanks to the higher prices of natural rubber, the region’s signature product.

Expenses for Chinese New Year include buying offerings for Chinese deities, traditional money for red envelopes, donations, and other commodities.

The survey also found the money in the red packets of cash given to children counts for almost Bt3 billion, given on average for Bt3,000 per person, while travel will amount to about Bt4 billion.

Despite an improving economy, the director of the UTCC Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, Dr Thanawat Polvichai, said due to higher prices in commodities the Chinese New Year’s atmosphere this year will be similar to last year, with people tending to be more careful not to spend too much on offerings such as pigs, ducks and chickens for the deities.

He said the Thai-Chinese, however, would increase their spending on donations and as the celebration of Chinese New Year is on Sunday this year, families of Chinese origin tended to go on one-day trips near Bangkok, mostly to the eastern provinces of Chonburi and Rayong.

Meanwhile, Suvarnabhumi Airport expects to welcome around 1.4 million passengers during the 10-day Chinese New Year festival, according to general manager Nirandra Theeranartsin.

He said the estimated number of passengers this year was higher than last year by about 3,000 passengers per day on average.

Regarding Valentine’s Day, Dr Yajai Chuwicha, chairman of UTCC’s Chamber Business Poll Working Committee, said Valentine expenses would be some Bt2.4 billion, a 5 per-cent increase from last year or Bt1,000 per person on average.

Dr Yajai said 71 per cent of respondents will buy flowers, mainly roses, tulips and lilies, followed by chocolates, dolls and Valentine’s cards for their lovers. (TNA)
