India-Turkey agree to cooperate for early CCIT finalization

New Delhi, Feb 10, IRNA -- India and Turkey have decided to work together along with other like minded countries for the early finalisation of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, (CCIT).

Turkey is the first country in the Organisation of Islamic Countries, OIC to agree for working with India on finalising the convention.

In a joint declaration on terrorism agreed to at the talks between the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and the visiting President of Turkey Abdullah Gul in New Delhi on Tuesday, the two sides stressed the need for concluding the convention on terrorism wihtout any further delay.

While affirming the common commitment to fight terrorism, the two countries denounced those who sponsor, abet and instigate terrorism and provide them safe havens.

They also stressed that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilisation and ethnic group. The officials of the two sides have been asked to develop an action plan with specific measures and time frames to enhance bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism.

The Turkish President said that India's contribution in Afghanistan is very important and expressed the desire to work together with India to bring stability there.

India made it plain to Turkey about India's role, interest and goodwill for Afghanistan.

The two countries came out with a joint declaration on cooperation in Science and Technology and decided to explore the possibility to work together in identifying projects in IT, Telecommunication, Space Reserch, Bio and environmental -technology. On the ongoing defence cooperation, the Turkish Defence Minister will be visiting India shortly.

On the economic front, the two are also working towards free trade agreement and a study group has already been set up in this regard. Dr Manmohan Singh pointed out that the trade between the two countries which touched 3 billion dollars in 2008 is much below their potential.

Abdullah also attend business interactions organized by Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi.

Turkish President who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday is accompanied by several ministers, members of Parliament and a large business delegation.

He will also visit Agra and Mumabi. In Mumbai, beside attending the business interaction organized by FICCI and CII, Abdullah will also inaugurate the Turkish Consulate./end
