Haiti needs plastic surgeons, physiotherapists: Thai physician
BANGKOK, Feb 8 (TNA) – A team of Thai doctors, returning from Haiti said Monday that the quake-hit country needs more surgeons and physiotherapists to help survivors, noting that Thailand will provide more assistance in prosthetic and orthotic production.
Dr Piroj Boonsirikamchai, assistant secretary-general of the Emergency Medical Institute who led the Thai team of doctors to Haiti which left Bangkok on January 29 and returned February 6 said doctors from the US suggested that more plastic surgeons, physiotherapists
and specialists in producing prostheses be needed as many victims became disabled in the natural disaster.
The Thai Emergency Institute cooperated with the Prostheses Foundation of HRH The Princess Mother to make prosthetic limbs and will discuss the Haiti issue with Paijit Varachit, Permanent
Secretary for Public Health on Wednesday.
Speaking about the situation in Haiti, Dr Piroj said medications and medical supplies are adequate but cannot be distributed to cover needs due to the poor security in the earthquake-devastated areas.
However, drinking water and instant food is still needed in some areas.
He said the team of Thai doctors worked at a field hospital, housing four operation rooms during their nine-day mission.
Twenty five doctors including surgeons and anesthesiologists treated quake survivors as the number of outpatients dropped from 200 to 60 per day on average.
Regarding the living of international medical teams, they face difficulties and must prepare food and water by themselves. They also are not allowed to leave their housing after 6pm to avoid possible danger.
To deal with the problem, he said that the Thai Emergency Medical Institute would coordinate with the local hospitals with Haitian and French interpreters before sending new medical teams. (TNA)
