Banda Aceh, June 21 (ANTARA) - The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has financed the construction of 58 elementary school buildings in the western coast of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province after the deadly tsunami devastated the area in December 2004.
"The project is aimed at giving a chance to children in the western coast of the province to compete with those in the rest of Indonesia," acting chief of the Unicef office in Meulaboh, Begna K Edo, said on Saturday.
The 58 elementary school buildings consisting of 27 in Aceh Jaya district, 24 in West Aceh district and seven in Nagan Raya district had been handed over to the local governments and people, he said.
Unicef had committed itself to constructing 346 school buildings in tsunami-devastated Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam perovince and Nias island in North Sumatra province, he said.
He said 109 of them had been and would be built in the western coast of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam including 35 in Aceh Jaya district and 16 in Nagan Raya district.
Meanwhile, 20 school buildings in South Aceh district and four others in Singkil district were still under construction, he said.
Aceh bore the brunt of a 8.9 magnitude undersea earthquake and a subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004 when more than 190,000 people perished.
