'Lions' descend on Bangkok for Thailand's biggest ever international

BANGKOK, June 21 (TNA) - More than 25,000 people from over 100 member countries of the Lions Clubs International will participate in a five-day meeting in Thailand beginning Monday.
The 91st annual Lions Clubs International Convention, the largest
international meeting ever held in Thailand, will be sponsored jointly by several public and private organizations, including the Lions Club in Thailand and the government-run Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Participants will exchange knowledge and work experience on public service activities in each country during the convention, which organisers say will lead to strengthening their friendships and cooperation in future.
Convention highlights include an international parade of nations on
Tuesday. The opening plenary session starts Wednesday, followed by
international shows in the afternoon.
On June 27, the international Lions' organisation will present its
Humanitarian Award to 2006 Nobel Peace Prize awardee Muhammad Unus, from Bangladesh, for his pioneering work to helping the poor in his country by providing loans from his Grameen Bank--designed especially to benefit low-income people, especially those without conventional collateral, and teaching them in the process a number of significant financial principles to help them rise from poverty.
It is expected that over Bt3 billion will be spent in the Kingdom by those persons attending the Lions' convention.
