Couple rescued after night in a river

A couple wearing only their swimsuits spent a freezing night huddled under a tree
after they were hurled from their lilos in a flooded Sydney river.
The 24-year-old man and 23-year-old woman parked their car at the Navua Reserve at
Grose Wold, in Sydney's northwest, about 8.40pm (AEDT) on Friday.
The couple, named by Network Ten as Nathan Harrison and Kate Ryan, told police they
entered the Hawkesbury River on air mattresses before they were thrown off in flash
flooding.
They managed to swim to the river bank and clutched onto tree branches, pulling
themselves out of the current.
"So quickly, it happened so quickly," Mr Harrison said.
"When we did find land, we just found the biggest tree we could and just lay on top
of each other to keep warm."
Mr Harrison's father raised the alarm about 7am on Saturday after he failed to make
contact with his son.
Police launched an air and water search with the assistance of the State Emergency
Service.
About 8.45am a PolAir crew spotted the couple in scrubland a few kilometres downstream.
They were only wearing their swimming costumes and suffered from the elements but
were unharmed from the incident.
