Qld town on high alert for flooding

Sixteen houses sandbagged against rising floodwaters in the south-west Queensland
town of Roma have escaped inundation - for now.
Floodwaters have peaked, Maranoa Regional Council mayor Robert Loughnan says.
Bungil Creek peaked at seven metres and should start receding, Mr Loughnan told AAP
at 6.30pm (AEST).
However the town of 7000, 475km north-west of Brisbane, will remain on alert as a
second flush of water heads towards Roma after up to 100mm of rain fell in the
region overnight on Thursday.
"We sandbagged about 16 houses to prevent the water going in," Mr Loughnan said.
"We've got another 600 sandbags filled just in case storms come in through the night.
"As I speak there's a pretty good looking thunderstorm just north-east of Roma."
Mr Loughnan said authorities will meet again on Saturday morning to assess the flood
risk.
Bungil Creek is likely to peak again mid-morning, he said.
The forecast for the Maranoa region is for patchy rain areas, scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms through out the weekend.
