Four city corporations, nine pourasabhas to go for election on Aug 4

Dhaka, Bangladesh, June 21 (BSS) -Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) today announced the polls schedule for four city corporations and nine pourasabhas, resuming the electoral process in the country after about one and a half years since proclamation of the State of
Emergency in January last year.

As per the schedule, the election to four city corporations
and nine pourasabhas will be held on August 4, said Chief
Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda at a press
conference at the EC conference room this afternoon.

The last date for submission of the nomination papers is July
3. The nomination papers will be scrutinized on July 6 and 7. The
last date of withdrawal of nomination paper is July 13.

The government has relaxed the relevant provisions of the
Emergency Powers Rule (EPR) in the polls constituencies for 21
days from July 13 to facilitate the candidates to organize
election procession and rallies.

The city corporations going for election are: Rajshahi,
Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet while the pourasabhas are: Dupchachia
in Bogra, Nouhatta in Rajshahi, Golapganj in Sylhet, Sitakunda in
Chittagong, Fulbaria in Mymensingh, Sreepur in Gazipur,
Manikganj, Shariatpur and Chuadanga.

The Election Commission also appointed the Deputy Election
Commissioners as the Returning Officers and District Election
Officers as the Assistant Returning Officers for conducting the
polls.

Additional Division Commissioner (general) of the four
divisions were appointed as Appeal Officers in the city
corporation areas while Deputy Commissioners of the concerned
districts were appointed for hearing the appeals of the
pourasabha candidates.

Announcing the schedule, the CEC said the first round of
local bodies election is the primary step towards implementing
the roadmap announced by the commission in July last year.

"The election should have held few months ahead. But, it was
not possible as some rules regarding local government councils
have not been prepared timely," he said.

Election Commissioners M Sohul Hossain and Brig. Gen (retd) M
Sakhawat Hossain and senior officials were present.
