People smuggling discussed in Jakarta
Australia's people smuggling ambassador will meet with Indonesian officials in Jakarta.
Peter Woolcott will be in Jakarta on Thursday for "general discussions" with the
Indonesian government about people smuggling, the Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade says.
But Indonesia is likely to bring up an ongoing asylum seeker stand-off at a port in
Java's west.
About 240 Sri Lankan asylum seekers have spent almost four months refusing to leave
their boat at the port of Merak.
The Tamils, intercepted by Indonesia at Australia's request in October, do not want
to come ashore because they fear they will be forced to wait years for resettlement.
They want instead to be given a rapid resettlement deal like the one Australia used
to coax 78 Tamils off the Oceanic Viking.
The Rudd government has sought to distance itself from the Merak stand-off but
Indonesia says it wants Australia's help to resolve it.
