UK author blames US devastation on “aggressive” foreign policy

London, Feb. 3, IRNA - America's devastation is the direct cause of years of “imperialism” and “aggressive US foreign policy” particularly in the Middle East, a member of the Respect Party in Britain said.

Referring to the first State of the Union Address by US President Barack Obama, Yvonne Ridley told IRNA that the gap between the rich and poor is ever widening as the result of US policies.

“...The fact that one in 10 Americans can't find work, businesses have gone bust and the property market has dived is the direct cause of years of imperialism, unjust wars, corporate greed and US foreign policy.”

She said Americans are still outraged by the bonuses the banks are handing out while many believe the Obama administration is “still far too cozy with Wall Street”.

Ridley added that Obama’s State of the Union message gave him an opportunity to “redirect the nation’s political discourse”.

“But there was little in his delivery to put a smile on the faces of ordinary American voters who believed a Democrat in the White House could make a difference.”

Criticising America’s foreign policy, she said the US is bombing Pakistan and Afghanistan and carrying out targeted assassinations in Yemen and Somalia.

Ridley, also a veteran journalist and author, said American people are urging Obama to “switch focus closer to home” on job creation and introduce tougher regulations on the financial sector.

“Small businesses are collapsing as credit dries up while huge corporations are being bailed out by greedy banks that have already been bailed out using taxpayers’ dollars,” she said, hinting that capitalism is on the brink of failure.

“Education is becoming an impossible dream for many and student loans with high interest repayments are making 'the dream' become more inaccessible putting capitalism on the brink of failure.”

Asked about the solution to US “devastation”, Ridley urged American policymakers to step down from their “aggressive foreign policy” and focus more on domestic issues.

“For instance, if US taxpayers realised that the subsidies given to prop up the Zionist state of Israel works out at 50,000 dollars for each Israeli citizen, they'd be horrified. This destructive use of aid is also repeated in Turkey and Egypt.

"Perhaps it would have been more constructive if Obama had used his State of the Union Address to cut back on US commitments abroad which fuel insecurities and security issues at home.

In his annual address to the US Congress, President Obama admitted that he faces “big and difficult challenges” at home and abroad.
Obama said one in 10 Americans still cannot find work, many businesses have shuttered and life has become “much harder” for the people./end
