Thailand'sTrade and Service Sentiment Index rises in December
BANGKOK, Feb 3 (TNA) – Thailand's Trade and Service Sentiment Index in December 2009 rose to 54.6 points from 50.3 points in November with other confidence indexes seen to be increasing in all business sectors, according to Yuthasak Supasorn, Director-General of the SME Promotion Office.
He said that confidence indexes in the wholesale, retail, and service sectors rose to 50.5, 54.4, 56.1 respectively from 47.7, 50, and 51.3 points in November. So did confidence indexes in the country’s economy and self-owned businesses which climbed to 50.1 and 60.1 from 46.5 and 48 points respectively.
The increase in all confidence indexes was attributed to the overall economic pickup, more spending in the tourism season and the Christmas and New Year holidays, and lower fuel prices.
Sectors with confidence indexes surging to higher levels in December included tourism and related businesses, the wholesale consumer trade, and retail vehicle and motorcycle trade.
The confidence indexes on wholesale consumer trade and the retail vehicle and motorcycle trade rose because entrepreneurs enjoyed higher sales and profits as witnessed by the strong sales bookings of 25,220 units of vehicles in the Motor Expo 2009.
The indexes on the tourism and related businesses soared since the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand rose by 28.96 per cent from the same month the year before and the hotel occupancy rate increased by 6.25 per cent.
However, the expected Trade and Service Sentiment Index for the next three months dropped to 50.3 from 53.1 points with confidence indexes seen decreasing in all business sectors.
The fall in the expected TSSI during the next three months stemmed from the sharp drop in the indexes on tourism and related businesses as entrepreneurs are worried about political conflicts and the public is set to slow their spending. (TNA)
