Iranian FM meets with Portuguese counterpart

Tehran, Feb 1, IRNA – Portugal’s Foreign Minister Luis Filipe Marques Amado said reaching an agreement on Tehran reactor could be an important step towards mutual confidence-building.
He made the remark during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki at the sidelines of the 14th African Union summit in Ethiopia.
Pointing to constructive talks on various regional and international issues between the two foreign ministers during their previous meetings, Amado stressed the necessity of holding constructive talks between Iran and other European states as well.
He further highlighted the significant geo-political position of Iran and reviewed some issues of mutual interest with Iranian foreign minister.
Mottaki, too, outlined Iran’s fair and principled stands regarding its peaceful nuclear program and said Iran’s proposal regarding simultaneous exchange of fuel for its research reactor was still an open option.
Turning to Iran’s domestic issues, the Iranian foreign minister differentiated those who opposed the results of the latest presidential elections in Iran from those who created unrest in the country.
He reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran would not stand any chaos and rioting and treats people involved in such actions as certain groups alienated from the nation.
In relating developments, Mottaki also met with Swedish deputy Foreign Minister at the sidelines of the meeting.
He said Iran’s sensitive position in an important region called for a dynamic diplomacy.
The Swedish official, too, said such a diplomacy adopted by Tehran indicated the significance of the country in the region./end
