Former Pakistani Army Chief strongly opposes new sanctions on Iran

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31, IRNA -- Former Pakistan Army Chief General (Retd) Mirza Aslam Beg on Saturday strongly condemned US Senate vote for new sanctions on Iran saying that it is not possible to get favorable results out of these exercises.

Talking to IRNA, he said that the exercise for imposing new sanctions on Iran is totally illogical and a serious violation of human rights and international principles.

“Countries do not make concessions under pressure, idea of sanctions is not viable”, he noted.

The US Senate has voted for new sanctions on Iran aimed at forcing it to freeze its nuclear program by depriving the Islamic Republic of gasoline.

The Senate bill aims to punish non-Iranian firms that do business in Iran’s energy sector or help the Islamic Republic produce or import refined petroleum products like gasoline by blocking them from doing business in the US market.

The United Nations Security Council has already imposed three rounds of sanctions against Iran. In addition, several western nations have warned that the Islamic Republic will face harsher sanctions if it fails to halt its uranium enrichment program.

General (Retd) Mirza Aslam Beg requested the West not to adopt contradictory policies towards Iran’s nuclear program, saying that a country like Israel has ambitions for a large scale nuclear program but the West is not putting any pressure on Israel.

“Iran says its nuclear program is solely meant for civilian applications of the technology yet West is pointing finger at Iran’s nuclear program which is not justified,” he said.

“US knows that no country expect one of two in the world favors sanctions on Iran that is why it has passed a resolution from the senate for new sanctions”, the analyst viewed. “These sanctions have no significance for the rest of the world”, he added.

Aslam Beg said that Iran is following a right path and US will not be able to succeed in accomplishing its evil designs against Iran. “Truth always wins”, he added.

“Iran has been facing tough sanctions but the country has made enormous progress in every field, countries under pressure always progress a lot”, he opined.

The analyst was of the view that ultimately US has to start a dialogue with Iran as they have decided to start a dialogue with Taliban in Afghanistan.

Aslam Beg believed that the policy of putting pressure has always produced an opposite results and country like Iran cannot be pressurized by threats

“Iran is a nation that doesn't withdraw from its rights and would never surrender its nuclear program by such coward acts”, he opined.

The analyst to a question said that the US would not dare to attack Iran. “Iran is a powerful country and has the ability to defend itself in any untoward situation”, he said.

He said that US and Israel cannot even think to launch an attack on Iran. “Look what happened to Israel in Lebanon they were completely defeated by Hizbollah”, he added./end
