No solution to Afghan problem without Iran’s participation: Analyst

Islamabad, Jan 30, IRNA -- Pakistani political and defence analyst Dr. Shireen M. Mazari on Friday said that Iran has a principled stance on Afghanistan and without taking Tehran on board, the issue will not be resolved.

Talking to IRNA, she said that Iran, being a major state of the region, should be given a clear role on the Afghan issue.

“I think Iran has taken a good decision by not participating in the London Conference and the reservations of Iran over the agenda of the conference were genuine”, she added.

Earlier Iran had decided not to attend the London Conference on Afghanistan saying that the continuation of the past policies would not lead to resolving the country’s problems.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mihman-Parast had said that the main causes of Afghanistan's problems as well as the issue of regional approaches were not placed on the gathering’s agenda.

The main focus of the conference was the debate of trying to bring Taliban into the reconciliation process and controversy over the establishment of a "reintegration fund", which is likely to be controlled by Karzai's government.

Dr. Shireen M. Mazari expressing her views opined that though there was some change in the policy of west on Afghanistan as they have decided to initiate a dialogue with Taliban but still the policies in Afghanistan are being manipulated by the US.

The analyst believed that military presence would not increase in Afghanistan after the conference as it was decided in the meeting to bring Taliban into main stream which is the only solution of Afghanistan problem.

Dr. Shireen M. Mazari said that the issue of Afghanistan should be solved within the region rather immediate neighbors of Afghanistan should sit together and find the solution of the troubled country.

“I think the idea of holding the conference was correct, however it could be more fruitful if the actual issues of Afghanistan were discussed in the meeting”, said Dr. Shireen M. Mazari.

Shireen M. Mazari is a scholar and commentator on Strategic Studies and Political Science from Pakistan. She was Director General of Institute of Strategic Studies, a research think-tank based in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Currently she is working as Editor of English newspaper daily ‘The Nation’./end
