Thai PM to attend World Economic Forum in Davos
BANGKOK, Jan 29 (TNA) - Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva left Bangkok on Friday to attend the 40th World Economic Forum 2010 in Davos, Switzerland during January 29-31.
This year’s World Economic Forum will be attended by national leaders, heads of international organisations, business, private and public sector representatives and world media totalling 2,500 persons from over 90 countries.
The theme “Improve the State of the World: Rethink, Redesign, Rebuild” will emphasise creating networks of cooperation in economic recovery and welfare, preventing risks or the failure of sustainable development, creating confidence, good attitudes, as well as making more efficient global mechanisms and organisations.
The Thai premier will meet with other leaders and carry his visions and boost confidence in Thailand’s proactive economic policy. He will also show willingness to cooperate with the global community and various sectors in solving problems and dealing with world challenges.
He also plans to encourage private sector leaders to join the Thailand Round Table 2011 in June to meet with Thailand’s state and business sectors on trade and investment cooperation.
Mr Abhisit will speak and participate in meetings including one of the theme of “Global Redesign-Priority for Strengthening the International System,” in which the prime minister will define his vision regarding international cooperation for global change, the main issue of the forum.
He will also give a keynote speech and exchange ideas in a meeting on “Food Security, Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture: An Agenda for action”.
In this 40th WEF, Mr Abhisit will discuss Thailand’s role as a top food producer responsible to consumers in terms of quality and safety. He will emphasise fair trade and the message that Thailand has never and will never implement commercial blockages. In addition, he will use the occasion present ways in solving food security problems by focusing on international cooperation.
The prime minister will address ways to solve corruption in countries with new economies at the “Davos 2010 Anti-Corruption Private Dinner”.
During the forum he will discuss Thailand’s progress in battling corruption by emphasising roles of private and civil society sectors as well as sharing Thailand’s experiences in creating alliances with every sector.
The prime minister will lead the exchange of ideas regarding the East Asian Community in a forum entitled “Towards an East Asian Community”.
In addition, Mr Abhisit will meet bilaterally with a range or personages including Swiss President and Economics Minister Doris Leuthard, Belgian prime minister Yves Leterme, Mexican president Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy and the Duke of York.
As for the private sector, the prime minister will meet with Prof Klaus Schwab, founder and CEO of the World Economic Forum, Coca-Coca board chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent, and US-ASEAN Business Council chairman Heinz Haller, executive vice-president of Dow Chemicals Company.
The prime minister will also chair the “Business Interaction Group on Thailand” in order to create understanding on the government’s policy and promote trade and investments in Thailand.
Mr Abhisit will also meet with various international media for interviews with BBC, CNN, and Newsweek magazine, and will meet executives from various media such as Reuters, Bloomberg, AP, Die Zeit, Gruppo Pisa and AFP. (TNA)
