Thailand to burn 16 tonnes of narcotics June 26
BANGKOK, June 19 (TNA) - To mark the United Nations Anti-Drugs Day falling on 26 June every year, Thailand is set to burn more than 16 tonnes of narcotics worth over Bt10 billion.
Thailand's Ministry of Public Health announced it planned to set ablaze illegal drugs over 16 tonnes of drugs whose street values are up to Bt10 billion. The plan is in compliance with the United Nations' mandate to eradicate drug use and trafficking, which sees its culmination on June 26 annually -- the international anti-drug day.
Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsab revealed the government is stepping up its drugs eradication campaign, adding that the task had grown more difficult given strategies of trafficking having developed further than that for which Thailand's police had been prepared for.
Besides the 16 tonnes of narcotics to go under the fire, 18.2 tonnes of confiscated evidence from unsettled drug cases still awaits being wiped out.
The annual anti-drug bonfire is to demonstrate the determination of the Thai government to destroy drugs either produced in or trafficked into Thailand, said the Ministry of Public Health in a statement.
The drugs to be thrown into the bonfire include 32 million tablets of methamphetamine and 1.1 tonnes of heroin, 7.2 kilogrammes of ecstasy and 2.2 kilogrammes of cocaine.
The ministry ensured the burning of the narcotics would be environmentally friendly as they would be burnt in very high temperatures of more than 850 degrees Celsius, which very quickly dissolves which very quickly dissolves the molecules of the substance being burnt.
