Two dead in car rollover in Victoria
Two Singaporean tourists have died and four other people have been injured when
their passenger van overturned on a country road in western Victoria.
A man and a woman, believed to be aged in their 20s or 30s, died at the scene of the
crash on the Glenthompson-Caramut Road near Caramut, about 250km west of Melbourne.
Their silver Toyota Tarago rolled beside the road at about 10.30am (AEDT) on
Thursday, police said.
A man, believed to be in his 20s, was flown to The Alfred hospital and a woman,
thought to be aged in her 30s, was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, both with
serious injuries.
The driver, also thought to be in his 30s, and an eight-year-old girl, were taken by
road ambulance to the Warrnambool Hospital in a stable condition.
The girl suffered cuts to her head.
Sergeant Kevin Garrett of Mortlake police said the crash victims were all related.
"This is a classic country accident," he said.
"It's happened on a perfectly straight stretch of road. The road surface was in good
condition and there was ample room for two vehicles to pass.
"For some reason the driver of the Tarago has traversed into the gravel shoulder and
the driver's over-corrected and caused the vehicle to start rolling."
It's thought the vehicle was a hire car.
The car was heading north, in the direction of the popular Grampians National Park,
a series of granite mountain outcrops a short distance from Glenthompson.
"Everyone was wearing their seatbelts but when a vehicle rolls as this one did, it
can end in fatal injuries," Sgt Garrett said.
The double fatality takes the state's road toll to 22 compared to 25 for the same
time last year.
