Iran not to attend London Conference on Afghanistan
Iran would not attend the London Conference on Afghanistan which is to be held on Thursday as Tehran believed the continuation of the past policies would not lead to resolving the country’s problems, a senior Foreign Ministry official said Wednesday night.
“Iran is not to take part in the conference as it came to the conclusion that the main cause of Afghanistan's problems as well as the issue of regional approaches to settle them were not placed on the gathering’s agenda,” Ramin mihman-Parast, the Foreign Ministry spokesman told IRNA.
He added that Tehran decided not to take part in the conference as it realized that the gathering is to focus on increasing military presence in Afghanistan as well as pursuing the old double standard policy regarding the current developments in that country.
“Despite of being invited to the conference, we believe that Iran’s presence in London would not be useful as a result of the directions taken for the gathering,” Mihman-Parast stated.
He hoped that “an effective measure" would be taken with the help of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as some of the regional states to resolve problems in Afghanistan.
Iran had previously announced that Afghanistan's problems should be resolved through regional cooperation and that it would only participate in the London Conference should the issue of adopting regional solutions to resolve Afghanistan's problems was on the top of its agenda.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki had also said earlier that Iran would not participate in the London Conference, if Tehran’s considerations were not included in the final statement of the conference.
