MUSLIM FORUM STAGES RALLY DEMANDING AHMADIYAH'S DISBANDMENT

Jakarta, June 18 (ANTARA) - Thousands of members of the Muslim Forum (FUI) staged a rally in front of the Merdeka palace here on Wednesday urging the government to issue a presidential decree to disband Ahmadiyah.

"We ask President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to issue a decree to disband
Ahmadiyah," one of the protesters said.

He said his organization demanded more than freezing of Ahmadiyah as stated in
a joint decree signed by the religious affairs minister, the home affairs
minister, and the attorney general recently.

The protesters also brought banners demanding the banning of Ahmadiyah which
the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI( had declared to be a deviant sect.

The banners' texts read among other things "Disbandment of Ahmadiyah is
final", "Ahmadiyah is lackey of colonizers", "Dissolve Ahmadiyah by
presidential decree".

The protesters also expressed support for Islam Defenders' Front (FPI)
chairman Habib Rizieq Shihab and Islamic Legion chief Munarman who are
currently being detained at the Jakarta Police Headquarters.

From the Merdeka palace, the FUI members were scheduled to proceed to the
Jakarta Police Headquarters.

Among the protesters were around 100 members of an NGO called National Front
who also demanded the disbandment of Ahmadiyah and the cessation of the
activities of Namru 2, a research organization of the United States, in Indonesia.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the head of the Muslim Lawyers' Team, Mahendradatta,
said the Joint Decree (SKB) on Ahmadiyah did not solve the issue concerning
Ahmadiyah because it did touch the root of the problem.

The Indonesian government recently issued a joint ministerial decree banning
followers of Jamaah Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI) from carrying out their religious
activities but many Muslim organizations in the country were not satisfied as
it did not provide for JAI's dissolution.

Many Muslim groups have been exerting pressure on the government to disband the
JAI organization which they say is a heretical Islamic sect or had deviated
from the true Islamic tenets.
