MEMBERS OF SPSI'S CONFLICTING CAMPS CLASH

Medan, N Sumatra, June 17 (ANTARA) - Tens of people from the two conflicting camps in the All-Indonesia Labor Union (SPSI) clashed on Jalan Semarang here on Tuesday.

The clash involved members of the executive board of SPSI's North Sumatra chapter led by Muhyir Hasan Hasibuan and members of the Confederation of All-Indonesia Labor Unions (K-SPSI)'s North Sumatra chapter led by Raja Nasution.

An eyewitness said the brawl caused many residents to stay indoors and shops to close for fear they would suffer harm by the fighting.

The clash was believed to have been triggered by a dispute over a plot of land in the area, said the eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonimity.

But the conflicting groups stopped fighting when police officers arrived at the scene.

Police have detained 18 people for questioning.
