Food waste crusader wins hero award
A crusader against food wastage has been named Australia's Local Hero for 2010.
Sydney woman Ronni Kahn was horrified at the extent of waste she saw during a
20-year catering career, and decided something needed to be done.
The 57-year-old foodie started OzHarvest in 2004, a charity that collects excess
food from restaurants, cafes and events and delivers it to the needy.
The venture helps 163 charities in Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong, delivering more
than 110,000 meals every month.
It also spares thousands of tonnes of food from being dumped in landfill.
Ms Khan says it's "mind-blowing" that more than $5 billion worth of food in
Australia goes to waste each year, and her idea is simple commonsense.
"It's a no-brainer - your mother and granny say don't waste your food," she said.
