Mental health campaigner is top Aussie

A campaigner for better treatment for mentally ill young people is this year's
Australian of the Year.
Youth psychiatrist Patrick McGorry, from Victoria, was named the winner at a
ceremony in Canberra on Monday evening.
Prof McGorry is an advocate for early intervention for young mentally ill people,
and believes this can prevent people from committing suicide and help them return to
work or school.
He runs the Orygen Youth Health service and is the director of Headspace,
Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced the 2010 winner of the Australia of the Year on
the lawns of Parliament House in front of thousands of people, praising Prof
McGorry's drive and compassion.
"The incredible influence of his work, the number of young Australians and their
families whose lives have been improved, and the value of his contribution to the
nation cannot ever fully be measured," Mr Rudd said.
