The Hollywood actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have signed papers paving the way for a legal separation with joint custody of their six children, it was reported last night.
The couple, known as Brangelina, have been together since shooting the thriller Mr and Mrs Smith five years ago. They are said to have agreed that the children will live with Jolie.
The couple are not married; they said they would marry only when American homosexuals were also able to wed. Even so, documents were filed with a Los Angeles lawyer earlier this month to help with a smooth separation. Pitt and Jolie will keep all the money they have earned, which Forbes estimates at more than $100m (Ј62m) each.
Pitt, 46, will have full access to their three biological children, Shiloh and the twins Knox and Vivienne, as well as three adopted children, Maddox, from Cambodia, Zahara, from Ethiopia, and Pax, from Vietnam. All have the surname Jolie-Pitt.
Yesterday associates of both actors declined to comment, one saying it was a "private matter".
The lawyers, based in Beverly Hills, have cleared the path for an announcement that has been the subject of rumours for many months.
Last week National Enquirer magazine carried a story that Pitt and Jolie had a final explosive row at a New York restaurant called the Alto on January 6.
It claimed that Pitt staged the six-hour dinner as an intervention to persuade Jolie, 34, to get psychiatric help. It alleged that she had suffered depression since the death of her mother from ovarian cancer three years ago, since when Jolie's weight has dropped dramatically. It also claimed she had made a suicide attempt.
The magazine said that after that stormy night, the couple agreed their relationship was over and "their focus is now on making a smooth transition for their children".
Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, 40, his former wife, were seen backstage together at the Haiti telethon in Los Angeles on Friday while Jolie was in New York promoting her next film, Salt.
Last year they made world-wide headlines after dazzling the crowds at the Cannes Film Festival, at the premiere of Quentin Tarantino's new Second World War film, Inglourious Basterds.
The red carpet appearance was their first public outing together in several months.
Despite the rumours and claims about their relationship, a study last year found the couple, who are renowned for their humanitarian work, had greater star status than the Beckhams.
Forbes, the business magazine, also said Jolie, the star of blockbusters including Tomb Raider and Wanted, had dethroned Oprah Winfrey as the world's most powerful celebrity in her own right.
"She is in the dialogue of popular culture nearly every day - for her acting, for her relationship with Brad Pitt, for her children and for her philanthropic endeavours. All of this exposure leads to an extremely powerful celebrity brand,'' Forbes said.
That power is put towards good causes, including raising millions of pounds for several charities. Their latest efforts were just hours before the story broke in the News of the World, where they donated one million dollars to help aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres's operations in the earthquake ravaged country.
Jolie, a UN goodwill ambassador and human rights campaigner, has visited more than 20 hot spots including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sudan since being appointed to the post in 2001.
Pitt, who had his acting breakthrough in Thelma and Louise in 1991 and has gone onto star in dozens of Hollywood films entered the Who's Who this year as William Bradley Pitt.
Pitt is also frequently listed as one of the world's most attractive men and has had two Academy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations, winning one.
The pair began dating after meeting on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005, while Pitt, 46, was still married to the actress Jennifer Aniston, 40. They split in 2005, after a four-and-a-half-year marriage. They were photographed together for the first time just months later. The couple have three adopted children, Maddox, eight, Pax, six and Zahara, five, and three natural children Shiloh, three, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 17 months.
Such was the interest in the couple's children that when their twins were born, they signed a reported deal worth $14m (Ј7million) with several magazines.
Jolie, 34, has previously spoken of the "wonderful chaos" of raising a large family and how being pregnant was "great for the sex life" while Pitt said his partner had made him the "the happiest father ever".
The actress, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the drama Girl, Interrupted, has said that her acting career was fourth in her list of priorities - after being a mum to six kids, "a woman to Brad" and her charity work.
She said,"I say kids first, woman to Brad and then my work internationally; and try to educate myself and learn about the world and do some good things while I'm alive. So what is that? Fourth?
"I've been lucky to have a great career and a lot of success but I wake up every day just the luckiest mum and I don't want to miss school lunches and things like that."
The Hollywood actress, who has been found to be the world's ultimate lesbian heroine, has also claimed that open romances can work just as well as monogamous relationships, if both partners agree to it.
"Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other," she said.
Aniston, who once described Jolie, as "really uncool", a remark which Jolie laughed away, maintained a dignified silence on the break-up until November 2008, when she gave an interview to Vogue magazine. In that interview she criticised Jolie for discussing how she fell in love with Pitt while they filmed Mr and Mrs Smith.
Jolie, whose father is veteran actor Jon Voight, was previously married to Billy Bob Thornton, and Trainspotting actor Jonny Lee Miller.
Jolie and her father were reportedly attempting to reconcile after a public feud of nearly eight years after Pitt was said to be a "major factor" in her reaching out to her estranged father.
The pair have been involved in one of the most famous family feuds in showbusiness since 2001, when Voight told Access Hollywood that Jolie had "serious mental problems" and pleaded with her to seek help.
Relations had already become strained after Jolie learned Voight had had an affair behind her mother's back.
