Tehran, Jan 24, IRNA -- The World Tourism Organization is to set up a representative office in Iran.
According to Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, the move was agreed by the head of (ICHHTO), Hamid Baqaei, and secretary general of WTO, Taleb Rifai, in a meeting on the sidelines of International Tourism Trade Fair (Fitur) in Spain on Sunday.
They also agreed to hold Silk Road festival in Shiraz. Iran will also introduce a representative to WTO.
While visiting Iran’s pavilion in Fitur, Baqaei referred to the significance of attending such events to introduce Iran to the world and underlined the effective presence of the country in the upcoming international events.
The 30th Fitur opened on January 20 with participation of 12,312 companies from 170 countries and ended on January 24.
WTO based in Madrid, Spain, is a United Nations agency dealing with questions relating to tourism. It compiles the World Tourism rankings. It is a significant global body, concerned with the collection and collation of statistical information on international tourism.
WTO plays a role in promoting the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, paying special attention to the interests of developing countries.
The organization encourages the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, with a view to ensuring that member countries, tourist destinations and businesses maximize the positive economic, social and cultural effects of tourism and fully reap its benefits, while minimizing its negative social and environmental impacts.
