RI, JAPAN EXPLORING POSSIBILITY OF COOPERATION TO FORM DEFENSE STUDIES INSTITUTE
Tokyo, June 17 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Defense Ministry and Japan's National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) have agreed to explore the possibility of cooperating in the establishment of a university-level defense studies institute in Indonesia that could produce in-depth studies on future national defense, a senior defense ministry official said.
Director General for Defense Strategy at the Ministry of Defense Maj Gen Syarifuddin Tippe said here on Tuesday he had been in Japan to explore the possibility.
"We are visiting Japan to seek inputs and technical support for the formation of an Indonesian Defense University (IDU) which will be opened in March 2009," he said.
The former chief of the Sriwijaya Military Command said that during his visit in Japan he had gathered inputs as comparative materials for the establishment of an institution to educate military officers.
"The establishment of an Indonesian defense university is badly needed in the face of global challenges and the demands of democracy. It is part of the internal reforms being carried out by the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI)," he said.
The defense ministry's team had visited the Japanese defense department to observe its facilities and to have a look at the NIDS, a think tank which provides advice on various defense issues to Japan's self-defense forces.
