WEBSITE FOR ASEAN+3 EXCHANGE OF INFO ON INFECTIOUS DISEASES LAUNCHED

Jakarta, June 17 (ANTARA) - Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari here Tuesday officially launched a website for exchange of information on infectious diseases among ASEAN member counries, Japan, China and South Korea.

Officially called Information Exchange Network on Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) in ASEAN Plus Three Countries, the system's management is coordinated by Indonesia's health ministry.

In remarks on the occasion also attended by ASEAN Scretariat officials, Supari said the website was an important part of the countries' efforts to prevent and control infectious diseases.

Man's mobility supported by transportation technology had enabled infectious diseases to easily spread and cross borders of countries and regions, she said.

Therefore, coordination among countries in the region was crucial to prevent and control infectious diseases, the minister said.

"Multilateral coordination which is mutually beneficial, should be developed and maintained so it can go on, including through information exchange among nations," she said.
The website (www.ASEANplus3-eid.info) was designed to facilitate information exchange on emerging infectious diseases and provide policymakers, health program managers, and stakeholders the necessary information to help improve health interventions and raise awareness on health-related issues and concerns.

It was also intended to be a venue for discussion on pressing issues related to EIDs.

The website is coordinated by Indonesia's health ministry as a contribution to the regional initiatives on disease prevention and control. The ASEAN Experts Group on Communicable Diseases (AEGCD) and the ASEAN Plus Three Focal Points for Communication and Information Sharing would share responsibility in maintaining the website.

ASEAN member states are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The website was developed under the auspices of the ASEAN Plus Three EID Program managed by the ASEAN Secretariat and financially supported by the Australian government (AusAID).
