Two asylum seeker boats intercepted
Authorities have intercepted two boats suspected of carrying about 70 asylum seekers
off the north coast of Western Australia.
HMAS Ararat detained a boat late on Friday afternoon near West Islet at Ashmore Reef
believed to have 29 passengers and four crew aboard, a statement from Home Affairs
Minister Brendan O'Connor said on Saturday.
Early on Saturday HMAS Bathurst intercepted a boat one nautical mile north of
Christmas Island suspected to be carrying 38 passengers and two crew.
The two groups will be transferred to Christmas Island to undergo security, identity
and health checks, the statement said.
