Red Shirt protest begins at Chanthaburi golf resort
CHANTHABURI, Jan 23 (TNA) – A Red Shirt protest at a golf course in the eastern province of Chanthaburi by anti-government protesters confronting alleged double standards of law enforcement by the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva began Saturday afternoon.
Key members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) took turns to verbally assault the government amid tight police security.
No violence was reported at the Khao Soi Dao protest site, and key UDD leaders promised that the demonstration would end Sunday noon.
The UDD leaders pledged not to intrude into the Soi Dao Highland Golf Club in the forest reserve but will do so anyway if journalists ask to inspect areas of the forest reserve is alleged to have been compromised by influential persons.
Fugitive, ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will greet his supporters via video-link or phone-in at 8pm.
The UDD accuses the Soi Dao golf course owner, an associate of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda, of encroaching on Khao Soi Dao mountain forest reserve and building the golf course on national land.
The Red Shirt leaders linked Gen Prem to the golf course owned by a group of Bangkok Bank shareholders, since the privy council president was a chief adviser for the bank.
UDD protesters earlier in January protested at the resort home of Privy Councillor Gen Surayud Chulanont, a former prime minister appointed by the 2006 coupmakers, charging that it was built illegally in a forest reserve in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Gen Surayud has said he and his family are willing to turn over the resort home to the Royal Forest Department.
The state forestry agency has concluded its findings that Privy Councillor Surayud has no right to land ownership at the site, as it was allocated to landless farmers and cannot be sold according to a 1975 Cabinet resolution. Ownership of the land can only be passed on to heirs.
The Royal Forest Department will give the committee’s finding to Suwit Khunkitti at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, who will officially inform Gen Surayud to vacate the land and remove all construction and buildings within 30 days. (TNA)
