Culture Minister: Javanfekr to be appointed IRNA Chief

Shiraz, Jan 23, IRNA – The Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance announced here Friday that Ali Akbar Javanfekr would be appointed as IRNA's new Managing Director as of Sunday.

Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini who was speaking to the media reporters on the sidelines of a nationwide mourning ceremony on Imam Hussain (P) in Lamerd city of Fars Province, added that “the issuance of Javanfekr’s official order as the Islamic Republic News Agency's (IRNA) managing director is scheduled for Sunday and his introduction ceremony to IRNA staff would be on Tuesday.

Scientific and Executive Background
Ali Akbar Javanfekr Shahri was born in 1959 and is a student of management PhD. He holds an MA in media affairs and is a professor in media and communications.

Javanfekr is among IRNA’s veteran colleagues who began his cooperation with the country’s official news agency in the year 1980 as a reporter and during his 23 years of presence at IRNA he has served at various positions, including as an editor, editor-in-chief, a manager, and the head of IRNA’s local and foreign offices.

In 1989, following declaring open support for the late Imam Khomeini’s decree against the apostate Indian born British author Salman Rushdie, Javanfekr was deported form Spain.

Between the years 1989 and 2000 in addition to shouldering various media responsibilities at INRA, Javanfekr served as IRNA special correspondent of the Supreme Leader’s news.

During the years of the Sacred Defense (against the Iraqi Imposed War), for some years he served as IRNA office head in Abadan and the provincial capital city, Ahvaz, accompanying the combatants of Islam in various operations along with IRNA war news team dozens of times.

Javanfekr speaks English and Spanish languages fluently and numerous news items, articles and analyses by him have been published in Iranian and foreign publications.

He has had a role in the establishment of IRNA’s Iran Cultural and Media Institute that has been publishing various newspaper and magazines in various languages for over two decades.

During the past two years President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has issued two separate state orders appointing him as the Presidential Media Consultant of the 9th and the 10th governments; a position that he would most probably simultaneously hold during his service as IRNA chief./end
