BAKU HOSTS FIRST AZERBAIJAN-RUSSIA FORUM ON HUMANITARIAN COOPERATION

Baku, January 22 (AzerTAc). The first Azerbaijan-Russian forum on humanitarian cooperation today has started in Baku.
The event brought together Russian Minister of Culture Alexander Avdeev, rector of Moscow State Institute of International Relations, academician of Russian Academy of Sciences Anatoly Torkunov, head of the Federal Agency for CIS Farit Mukhametshin, MPs, scientists, workers of culture and art and media outlets.
Speaking at the forum, head of Azerbaijan`s Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehtiyev said the event would serve the further development of Azerbaijan-Russia relations. He expressed gratitude to the organizers of the forum, first of all, Russia`s Presidential Administration.
Mr. Mehtiyev said the workers of culture, science, sports and the parliamentarians form the socio-political climate of their countries. Head of the Administration raised the awareness about Genocide committed by Armenians against Azerbaijanis in different historical periods. On one of the most tragic pages in history of Azerbaijan – January 20, Mr. Mehtiyev underlined the criminal role of USSR`s leadership, who adopted a decision to station troops in Azerbaijan. He also underlined a role of the Soviet mass media in supporting separatists of Nagorno Karabakh at the start of Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.
Head of Administration underlined the role of national leader Heydar Aliyev in development of Azerbaijan-Russia relations. The first visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Azerbaijan in January 2001 and the visit of President Heydar Aliyev to Russia, in February 2002 laid a solid basis for expansion of bilateral relations between the two countries. These relations are successfully developing due to efforts of Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Dmitry Medvedev, Ramiz Mehtiyev said.
Russian President`s special envoy on international cultural cooperation Mikhail Shvidkoy told of significance of the forum aimed at widening humanitarian cooperation between the two countries and the role of mass media in this process.
Russian Minister of Culture Alexander Avdeex, head of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Mahmud Karimov, head of Federal Agency for CIS Farit Mukhametshin, Minister of Azerbaijan Culture Abulfaz Garayev made speeches at the forum.
