Thailand’s domestic vehicle sales surge in December
BANGKOK, Jan 21 (TNA) – Domestic sales of vehicles in December 2009 surged by 22.2 per cent from the same month last year to 72,085 units, the highest in three years, boosted by an increase in consumer confidence and industrial confidence, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).
Surapong Paisithpattanapong, spokesman of the FTI’s Automobile Industry Club, said vehicle sales soared by 26.4 per cent month on month. It is the fourth consecutive month sales increase.
He attributed the sharp vehicle sales rise to increased consumer and industrial confidence, implementation of the government economic stimulus scheme to help boost consumer purchasing power, higher farm product prices, improved tourism, and increased exports.
The vehicle sales for the whole year totalled 548,871 units, down 10.8 per cent from the previous year, but still higher than expected.
Exports of completely built-up (CBU) vehicles in 2009 totalled 535,565 units, down 31.01 per cent from the year before, with a value of Bt251.34 billion, a decrease by 21.94 per cent year on year.
